Computermuseum: Apple MacBook Air 11″ from 2014

When I acquired the original MacBook Air from 2008 in July 2025 and, shortly thereafter, the redesigned MacBook Air from 2010 for my computer museum, I wrote an article about the influence of these slim computers. The title of the article was MacBook Air – the role model for flat laptops. Both MacBook Airs were 13“ in size. At that time, I put all my compact computers together in a group photo. The two MacBook Airs can be found in the group photo under numbers 23 and 26. At that point, I thought how much I would love to have an MacBook Air 11” for my collection.

And lo and behold, my friend Niels granted me this wish. In December 2025, he gave me his 2014 MacBook Air 11“. And I wanted to see just how compact this device really is. When you compare it to its 13” MacBook Air siblings, it really is tiny in comparison.

Comparison with other compact notebooks

But I have even more compact computers in my collection. One very compact Apple notebook is the PowerBook G4 12“ from 2003. It is impressively small compared to even the MacBook Air 11”. This is all the more surprising because the PowerBook was a powerful notebook at the time, while the MacBook Air is only an entry-level notebook, also in terms of price.

The Sony Vaio VGN-TX3HP from 2006 is a truly compact notebook. It belonged to the expensive class of subnotebooks that packed a lot of power into a small form factor. In comparison, the MacBook Air 11″ seems almost large.

This means that the MacBook Air is one of Apple’s compact notebooks, but not one of the most compact notebooks ever made. In my opinion, Apple has produced an even more compact notebook. That would be the 12″ MacBook from 2015. It may have been slightly smaller in some dimensions. I’m curious to see if I can get my hands on one for my computer museum.

Als ich im Juli 2025 das originale MacBook Air von 2008 und wenig später dann das überarbeitete MacBook Air von 2010 für mein Computermuseum bekam, schrieb ich meinen Beitrag über den Einfluss dieser flachen Computer. Der Titel des Beitrags lautete MacBook Air – das Vorbild für flache Laptops. Beide MacBook Airs waren 13″ groß. Damals stellte ich alle meine kompakten Computer zu einem Gruppenbild zusammen. Die beiden MacBook Airs sind auf dem Gruppenbild unter den Nummern 23 und 26 zu finden. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt dachte ich, wie sehr ich mich über ein 11″ großes MacBook Air für meine Sammlung freuen würde.

Und siehe da, mein Freund Niels erfüllte mir diesen Wunsch. Aus seinem Besitz erhielt ich im Dezember 2025 sein MacBook Air 11″ aus dem Jahr 2014. Und da wollte ich mal sehen, wie kompakt dieses Gerät wirklich ist. Wenn man es mit den MacBook Air Brüdern in der 13″ Größe vergleicht, dann ist es wirklich winzig im Vergleich.

Vergleich mit anderen kompakten Notebooks

Aber ich habe noch kompaktere Computer in meiner Sammlung. Ein sehr kompaktes Apple Notebook ist das PowerBook G4 12″ von 2003. Es ist beeindruckend klein im Vergleich auch zum MacBook Air 11″. Das ist umso überraschender, weil das PowerBook damals ein leistungsfähiges Notebook war, während das MacBook Air nur ein Einsteiger-Notebook ist, auch was den Preis angeht.

Ein wirklich kompaktes Notebook ist das Sony Vaio VGN-TX3HP von 2006. Es gehörte zur teuren Klasse der Subnotebooks, die viel Leistung in einen kleinen Formfaktor packten. Im Vergleich dazu wirkt das MacBook Air 11″ fast groß.

Damit gehört das MacBook Air zwar zu den kompakten Apple Notebooks, aber nicht zu kompaktesten Notebooks aller Zeiten. Auch bei Apple gab es meiner Meinung nach noch ein kompakteres Notebook. Das dürfte das MacBook 12″ von 2015 sein. Es dürfte in einigen Dimensionen noch minimal kleiner gewesen sein. Ich bin mal gespannt, ob ich das Gerät noch für mein Computermuseum bekommen kann.
