What a computer icon. There are few products in the computer industry that have had a similar impact like iMac G3 from 1998. These include the Apple II, the IBM PC and the Osborne 1. This computer is a milestone in design and saved Apple from bankruptcy. The Mac OS 8 operating system still had no chance against Microsoft’s Windows 95 and 98. But the translucency of its case and the unusual rounded shape with the iconic carrying handle thrilled millions of buyers. The colour was a departure from every industry convention. Jony Ive replaced the German office beige with an intense blue, known as Bondi Blue.

I already had the iMac G3 from 2000 in graphite design in my collection. This was the version that Steve Jobs had wanted to release back in 1998. It had a slot-in drive for CDs instead of the less elegant CD tray that the first iMac in 1998 was equipped with. And the fan from the first iMac was no longer included.

I got this computer from a friend who used the iMac in her graphic design studies. It was the perfect system where the software she needed for her coursework would run. On this occasion, I also learned that her profession had been made almost obsolete by the use of AI.

Was für eine Computerikone. Es gibt nur wenige Produkte der Computerindustrie, die eine ähnliche Bedeutung wie der iMac G3 von 1998 haben. Dazu gehören der Apple II, der IBM PC und der Osborne 1. Dieser Computer ist ein Meilenstein im Design und hat Apple vor dem Untergang gerettet. Noch immer hatte das Mac OS 8 Betriebssystem keine Chance gegen Microsofts Windows 95 und 98. Aber die Transluzenz seines Gehäuses und die ungewöhnliche abgerundete Form mit dem ikonischen Tragegriff hat Millionen Käufer begeistert. Die Farbe war eine Abkehr von jeder Industriekonvention. Das deutsche Büro-Beige ersetzte Jony Ive durch ein intensives Blau, das sogenannte Bondi Blue.

In meiner Sammlung hatte ich schon lange den iMac G3 aus dem Jahr 2000 in Graphite Design. Dies war die Version, die Steve Jobs schon 1998 rausbringen wollte. Mit einem Slot-In-Laufwerk für die CD anstelle der weniger eleganten Schublade, mit der der erste iMac 1998 ausgestattet werden konnte. Und der Lüfter des ersten iMacs war dort auch nicht mehr enthalten.

Ich habe diesen Computer von einer Freundin erhalten, die den iMac in ihrem Grafikdesign-Studium einsetzte. Nur dort lief die Software, die sie für ihre Studienarbeiten benötigte. Bei dieser Gelegenheit habe ich aber auch erfahren, dass ihr Beruf durch den Einsatz von AI fast überflüssig gemacht wurde.
