What was I happy when my good friend “uncle” Bernd offered me one of his feature phones from the early 2000s for my computer museum. And it was a very special one. The Sony Ericsson W900i.
Sony Ericsson was one of the big creative companies in the market, along with Nokia, Motorola and others, which always produced interesting designs. Sometimes also designs that felt and looked good, but did not provide much added value in terms of function.
Somehow the W900i felt like that too. The numeric keypad can be seen under the screen via an interesting rotating mechanism. In this state, the device is twice as long as when closed. But this is the only way to use it to dial telephone numbers. The W in the name stands for the Walkman series, which Sony Ericsson established as continuation of the Walkmans and Discmans from the 80’s and 90’s. Also in the following years there were further Walkman phones.
Thank you for this great designed feature phone from Sony Ericsson. It gets a special place in my computer museum next to an original Walkman WM DD II from 1984.

Was habe ich mich gefreut, als mein guter Freund „Onkel“ Bernd mir eines seiner Featurephones aus den frühen 2000ern für mein Computermuseum anbot. Und es war ein ganz besonderes.
Sony Ericsson war neben Nokia, Motorola und anderen einer der großen kreativen Firmen auf dem Markt, die immer wieder interessante Designs herausbrachten. Manchmal auch Designs, die sich zwar gut anfühlten und aussahen, aber funktional nicht viel Mehrwert lieferten.
Irgendwie fühlte sich das W900i auch so an. Über einen interessanten Drehmechanismus zeigt sich unter dem Bildschirm die Zehnertastatur. In diesem Zustand ist das Gerät doppelt so lang wie im geschlossenen Zustand. Aber nur so kann man es zum Wählen der Verbindung nutzen. Das W im Namen steht für die Walkman-Serie, die Sony Ericsson als Fortführung der Walkmans und Discmans aus den 80er- und 90er-Jahren etablierte. Auch in den Folgejahren gab es weitere Walkman-Phones.
Ich bedanke mich für dieses großartig gestaltete Featurephone von Sony Ericsson. Es bekommt einen speziellen Platz in meinem Computermuseum neben einem originalen Walkman WM DD 2 aus dem Jahr 1984.

Da sind sie. Zwei Generationen von Walkmans (Fotos siehe oben). Ja, ja ich weiß. Der Original Walkman hat nichts mit einem digitalen Produkt gemein. Das ist klassische Analogtechnik.
