Computermuseum: Apricot Xi from 1984

Apricot (formerly known as ACT) was another very innovative and capable British company in the computer industry. I became aware of Apricot when I first saw the Apricot Portable. It was a stunning and really compact piece of PC technology. Finally I got the Apricot Portable for my collection. I also remember the Apricot F1 in a Magazine advert which had a very small size for a PC box. A few weeks ago I saw the Apricot Xi on eBay which showed some interesting features. It came out in 1984. I always thought that my device is the dark grey version with the 50 MB hard disk inside. It is considered as a very rare computer. But when I found a post by Harzretro with his Apricot XI I recognized that his device is more probably the grey one.

Apricot was especially successful in Europe with their computers which were not fully PC compatible but were able to run MS DOS and CP/M. In the early 80th IBM concentrated their sales effort on the US market and so small and innovative companies were able to pursuit the forgotten markets like Europe. The Apricot PC or the Xi offered an interesting keyboard with 6 programmable function keys and a small LCD display above these keys. It showed 2 lines with 40 characters. You were able to “control” this computer even without a screen. It also had one of the first 3,5” floppy disk drives built in. You even could carry this computer with the keyboard attached to the back, a small cover would conceal the floppy drive and a handle could be slid out of the case.

The case itself is heavily damaged. Several pieces of the plastic are broken. But actually this computer is an excellent proof of how capable the British computer industry was in the 80th.

Apricot (früher bekannt als ACT) war ein weiteres sehr innovatives und leistungsfähiges britisches Unternehmen in der Computerindustrie. Ich wurde auf Apricot aufmerksam, als ich zum ersten Mal den Apricot Portable sah. Es war ein atemberaubendes und wirklich kompaktes Stück PC-Technologie. Schließlich habe ich diesen Computer für meine Sammlung bekommen. Ich erinnere mich auch noch a den Apricot F1 in einer Zeitschriftenanzeige, der eine sehr kleine Größe für eine PC-Box hatte. Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich den Apricot Xi auf eBay gesehen, der einige interessante Features zeigte. Er kam 1984 heraus. Ich dachte immer, dass mein Gerät die dunkelgraue Version mit der eingebauten 50 MB Festplatte ist. Er gilt als sehr seltener Computer. Aber als ich den Blogeintrag von Harzretro über seinen Apricot XI sah, erkannte ich, dass seins wohl eher das graue Gehäuse hat.

Besonders erfolgreich war Apricot in Europa mit ihren Computern, die nicht vollständig PC-kompatibel waren, aber MS DOS und CP/M nutzen konnten. Anfang der 80er Jahre konzentrierte IBM seine Vertriebsanstrengungen auf den US-Markt und so konnten kleine und innovative Unternehmen die noch freien Märkte wie Europa bedienen. Der Apricot PC (zwei 3,5″ FDD) oder der Xi (ein HDD, ein 3,5″ FDD) bot eine interessante Tastatur mit 6 programmierbaren Funktionstasten und einem kleinen LCD-Display über diesen Tasten. Es wurden 2 Zeilen mit 40 Zeichen angezeigt. Man konnte diesen Computer auch ohne Bildschirm „steuern“. Er hatte auch eines der ersten 3,5″ Diskettenlaufwerke eingebaut. Man konnte diesen Computer sogar mit der Tastatur auf der Rückseite festgeclippt tragen, eine kleine Abdeckung konnte das Diskettenlaufwerk verdecken und ein Griff konnte aus dem Gehäuse gezogen werden.

Das Gehäuse selbst ist stark beschädigt. Mehrere Teile des Kunststoffs sind zerbrochen. Aber trotz allem ist dieser Computer ein hervorragender Beweis dafür, wie leistungsfähig die britische Computerindustrie in den 80er Jahren war.
