Computermuseum: HP Envy X2 from 2013

My friend Ralf has once again provided me with a remarkable laptop for my collection. It is yet another absolute design computer and an attempt by the Wintel camp to position a truly distinctive product on the market. Here is the HP Envy X2.
The HP Envy X2 11-g000eg is a 2-in-1 laptop and tablet and comes with Windows 8 pre-installed. This allows you to use the two operating modes introduced by Windows 8: desktop and tablet mode.
It is passively cooled via its high-quality aluminium casing, making it completely silent. It features a slow 64 GB SSD based on the eMMC standard. The computer is powered by an energy-efficient but low-performance Intel Atom CPU. Two batteries are fitted – one behind the screen and one in the keyboard dock – enabling the HP device to deliver all-day battery life.
Tablet mode
What sets it apart is its detachable screen. When used in tablet mode, it runs the Metro interface and is therefore faster than an iPad 4 in the Sunspider JavaScript benchmark (version 0.9.1). The keyboard dock offers a few additional ports. A notable feature is its stereo speakers bearing the Beats Audio label. At the time, Beats Audio was still an independent headphone manufacturer, known for its bass-heavy sound. Beats Audio was acquired by Apple in 2014.
I’ve already mentioned the high-quality brushed aluminium casing. It gives the device a solid and premium feel. The hinge used to detach the tablet from the keyboard dock is also interesting. Unfortunately, the device has a proprietary power connector and therefore requires a special mains adaptor.
This device was an attempt to bring more variety in form factors to the Wintel world. With Windows 8, the screen could then be operated by touch as standard for the first time. Although there had already been PCs that could be operated with styluses, Windows 8 introduced this capability to every PC.
Back in 2014, I already saw Windows 8 as a bold and correct move. At the time, I compared Microsoft’s strategy with Apple’s strategy for macOS and iPadOS. Apple still does not offer a touchscreen on its laptops running macOS.
A comparison with similar computers from other eras highlights just how compact and high-quality HP has designed this device.

My friend Ralf gave me this computer after he’d travelled all over the world with it. Later, his girlfriend Gunni used it, and she has now kindly passed the HP Envy X2 on to me. This is already the second item Ralf has lent me, following his Sony Vaio VGN-TX3HP (phew, what a cumbersome name), which I’ve had in my collection since 2019.

Mein Freund Ralf hat mir wiederum ein bemerkenswertes Laptop für meine Sammlung zur Verfügung gestellt. Es ist wieder ein absolutes Designstück und ein Versuch der Wintel-Fraktion, ein besonderes Produkt auf dem Markt zu positionieren.
Das HP Envy X2 11-g000eg ist ein 2-in-1 Laptop und Tablet und hat Windows 8 installiert. Damit können die beiden Betriebsmodi, die Windows 8 eingeführt hat, angewendet werden: Desktop und Tablet Modus.
Das Laptop ist passiv gekühlt über das hochwertige Alu-Gehäuse. Das Gerät ist damit völlig geräuschlos. Es hat eine langsame 64 GB SSD auf Basis des eMMC-Standards eingebaut. Ein sparsamer und wenig performanter Intel Atom CPU treibt den Computer an. Zwei Akkus sind verbaut, einer hinter dem Bildschirm und einer im Tastatur-Dock. Damit ermöglicht das HP Gerät eine All Day Batterieleistung.
Tablet Modus
Das besondere ist sein abnehmbarer Screen. Er arbeitet dann in der Metro-Oberfläche und ist damit schneller als ein iPad 4 im Sunspider JavaScript Benchmark (Version 0.9.1). Das Tastaturdock bietet ein paar zusätzliche Schnittstellen. Ein bemerkenswertes Detail sind seine Stereo Lautsprecher mit Beats Audio Label. Damals war Beats Audio noch ein unabhängiger Kopfhörerhersteller, mit sehr bassbetontem Sound. Beats Audio wurde im Jahr 2014 von Apple übernommen.
Das hochwertige Gehäuse aus gebürstetem Aluminium habe ich schon erwähnt. Es wirkt damit massiv und wertig. Auch interessant ist das Scharnier, mit dem man das Tablet vom Tastaturdock löst. Leider hat das Gerät einen proprietären Stromanschluss und benötigt dafür ein spezielles Netzteil.
Dieses Gerät war ein Versuch der Wintel-Welt mehr Vielfalt in Formfaktoren anzubinden. Mit Windows 8 wurde dann auch erstmals der Screen standardmäßig mit den Fingern bedienbar. Vorher gab es zwar schon mit Stiften bedienbare PCs, aber Windows 8 führte das für jeden PC ein.
Ich emfand schon im Jahr 2014 Windows 8 als einen mutigen und richtigen Schritt. Damals verglich ich Microsofts Strategie gegen Apples Strategie von macOS und iPadOS. Apple bietet immer noch keinen Touchscreen auf seinen Laptops mit macOS an.
Der Vergleich mit ähnlichen Computern anderer Zeiten zeigt auf, wie kompakt und hochwertig HP dieses Gerät gestaltet hat.

Später hat es dann seine Freundin Gunni genutzt, die mir das HP Envy X2 jetzt freundlicherweise überlassen hat. Es ist jetzt schon die zweite Leihgabe von Ralf nach seinem Sony Vaio VGN-TX3HP (puh, was für eine sperrige Bezeichnung), das ich schon seit 2019 in meiner Sammlung habe.
