Computermuseum: Highscreen 386SX 20 from 1991

Highscreen was the label of the german computer dealer Vobis. They were big during the 80s and 90s. In 1983 I visited the Vobis shop in Aachen to get my Sinclair ZX81 tweaked with a monitor connector. Later the two Vobis shops in Düsseldorf were my first address to buy software for my ZX81 and the new Sinclair QL itself. Vobis and Escom later offered under their labels a huge set of PC variations in every size. One of the PC style laptops from Vobis is the Highscreen 386SX 20.

And actually the only PC I would consider for my collection would be an original IBM PC from 1981 or a fancy Highscreen PC from Vobis. I always tried to get a Colani designed PC but I was never successful.

So eventually I got this Highscreen Laptop for 20€ on eBay. It is a nice example for a DOS PC without trackpad, trackpoint or whatever pointing device. I found a Vobis Flyer from 1991 with the specifications of this device. A whopping 4732 DM. But this was state of the art.

It was also sold under the OKANO brand by Karstadt, and possibly many others as well. Most notably, this system is known to be offered under the Halikan Brand by Chaplet Systems.

Compare it with the PowerBook 180 from 1992 you see that both platforms offered fat cases, small displays and fairly heavy weight for their portable computers.

Highscreen war die Handelsmarke des deutschen Computervertriebs Vobis. Sie waren groß und erfolgreich in den 80ern und den 90ern. Im Jahr 1983 besuchte ich den Vobis-Laden in Aachen, damit dort ein Monitoranschluß in meinen Sinclair ZX81 eingebaut werden konnte. Später gab es dann zwei Vobis-Läden in Düsseldorf, die meine erste Adresse für den Kauf von ZX81-Software und den neuen Sinclair QL war. Vobis und Escom waren dann später die größten PC-Anbieter in Deutschland.

Und tatsächlich ist der einzige PC, den ich für meine Sammlung akzeptieren würde, entweder ein originaler IBM PC von 1981 oder ein besonderer Highscreen PC von Vobis. Ich habe immer versucht einen der von Colani gestalteten PCs zu bekommen, war aber da nicht erfolgreich.

Endlich habe ich nun dieses Highscreen Laptop für 20€ bei eBay bekommen. Es ist ein schönes Beispiel eines DOS PC ohne Trackpad, Trackpoint oder irgendein anderes Pointing Device wie eine Maus. Ich fand dann schließlich auch einen Vobis “Denkzettel” von 1991 mit den Spezifikationen dieses Computers. Er kostete damals 4732 DM. Aber damals war das die absolute Leistungsspitze.

Karstadt verkaufte dieses Gerät auch unter seiner Marke OKANO. Vermutlich wurde es auch von vielen anderen Anbietern unter eigenem Markennamen angeboten. Am ehesten kennt man es unter dem Halikan-Namen von Chaplet Systems.

Verglichen mit einem PowerBook 180 von 1992 kann man sehen, daß beide Plattformen dicke Gehäuse, kleine Bildschirme und ziemlich viel Gewicht für portable Computer auf die Waage brachten.
