The Commodore Amiga 500 was THE gaming computer in the UK and Germany. It became the successor to the successful Commodore 64 in Germany and was even more successful in the UK. Many people who had a Sinclair ZX Spectrum in the early 80s switched to this computer. Almost 1.5 million units were sold in the UK alone. Mainly through bundling campaigns of an Amiga 500 with a top game, such as the Batman Pack.

I was completely immersed in the Atari ST ecosystem at the time and couldn’t do much with the Amiga. I wrote about the reasons for this in an article about Amiga – Commodore’s girlfriend. But the Amiga was still a technical marvel. Pre-emptive multitasking and its special chips Paula, Denise and Agnus allowed spectacular colour graphics and sound. This was a next-generation home computer that no comparable computer of the time could match. But there were already signs that PCs with their graphics cards and sound cards would soon overtake the Amiga.

Commodore brought out improvements for the Amiga 500, but even the successor models Amiga 1200 and Amiga 3000 could not save the company. In 1994, Commodore filed for bankruptcy. This was mainly due to management errors. One particularly serious mistake was to bring out the Amiga 600 as the successor to the Amiga 500.

Der Commodore Amiga 500 war DER Spielecomputer in UK und Deutschland. Er wurde damit in Deutschland der Nachfolger des erfolgreichen Commodore 64. In UK war er sogar noch erfolgreicher. Viele, die Anfang der 80er Jahre einen Sinclair ZX Spectrum hatten sind dann auf diesen Computer umgestiegen. Knapp 1,5 Millionen Geräte wurden alleine in UK abgesetzt. Vor allem durch Bundeling-Kampagnen eines Amiga 500 mit einem Top-Spiel, wie z.B. das Batman Pack.

Ich war damals vollständig im Atari ST Ökosystem untergetaucht und konnte mit dem Amiga nicht viel anfangen. Die Gründe dafür habe ich in einem Beitrag über Amiga – die Freundin von Commodore festgehalten. Aber der Amiga war trotzdem ein technisches Wunder. Präemptives Multitasking und seine Spezialchips Paula, Denise und Agnus erlaubten spektakuläre Farbgrafik und Sound. Dies war ein Homecomputer der nächsten Generation, mit dem kein vergleichbarer Computer der damaligen Zeit mithalten konnte. Aber es deutete sich schon an, dass die PCs mit ihren Grafikkarten und Soundkarten bald dem Amiga den Rang ablaufen würden.

Commodore brachte zwar Verbesserungen für den Amiga 500 raus, aber auch die Nachfolgemodelle Amiga 1200 und Amiga 3000 konnten die Firma nicht mehr retten. Im Jahr 1994 meldete Commodore Insolvenz an. Dies war vor allem in Managementfehlern begründet. Ein besonders schwerer Fehler war es, den Amiga 600 als Nachfolger für den Amiga 500 herauszubringen.
