Another gift from dear friends. And what a gift. My friend Barbara’s father gave me his Olivetti Laptop D33/C for my computer museum. This Olivetti laptop is from 1991 and has some very interesting and surprising details. The device was developed and produced at Triumph Adler in Nuremberg. Olivetti received the iF Design Award for it in 1991. The laptop was also sold as the TA Walkstation 386DX.
Features of the Olivetti Laptop D33/C
- The keyboard can be removed from the housing and placed on the desk in front of the laptop. The keyboard remains connected to the computer via a cable.
- The Olivetti D33/C has an Intel 386 DX processor with 33 MHz. The RAM memory is accessible via a flap under the keyboard.
- It is one of the first devices with a color LCD screen. And the biggest surprise is that you can simply remove this LCD and replace it with another display.
- Unfortunately, my device does not have the handle for opening the first hinge. Other models in this series had this and allowed the screen to be positioned higher. In particular, the screen was positioned further back.
- Like the Macintosh Portable from 1989, this laptop has a carrying handle. In addition, a small LCD display is visible to the right of the handle.
- The connections on the back of the housing are hidden behind a flap. The connectors are labeled with pictograms on the flap.
- A slot is visible behind a cover on the left-hand side.
- The battery is stowed under the keyboard and can be easily removed.
- A battery charging box is also supplied. However, this also supplied the computer with power when the battery was not plugged in.
- A touchpad with two buttons is located on the right-hand side above the keyboard. The display frame contains a stylus for operating the touchpad.
- A 3.5″ floppy disk is located on the right-hand side.

Carrying case for the Olivetti Laptop D33/C
Olivetti also put a lot of thought into the carrying case. The case was solid and secured with a combination lock. When you open this case, the laptop is in the top compartment. Underneath is a tray that can be removed. The area underneath contains the battery charging station and other cables. The manuals for starting up the computer were probably also in this compartment at the time. Unfortunately, these are no longer there.
Conclusion
All in all, this is a worthy collector’s item. Olivetti had tried to produce an exceptional product. It was used for a long time by my donor and was a reliable companion for all business transactions. Thank you very much for this heavy laptop 😀 It was definitely more practical and usable than the Apple product that was available that year. Und wieder ein Geschenk von lieben Freunden. Und was für eins. Der Vater meiner Freundin Barbara hat mir seinen Olivetti Laptop D33/C für mein Computermuseum bereitgestellt. Dieser Laptop von Olivetti ist von 1991 und bietet einige sehr interessante und überraschende Details. Das Gerät wurde bei Triumph Adler in Nürnberg entwickelt und produziert. Olivetti erhielt dafür 1991 den iF Design Award. Der Laptop wurde auch als TA Walkstation 386DX verkauft.
Features des Olivetti Laptop D33/C
- Man kann die Tastatur aus dem Gehäuse nehmen und vor dem Laptop auf den Schreibtisch ablegen. Die Tastatur bleibt über ein Kabel mit dem Computer verbunden.
- Der Olivetti D33/C hat einen Intel 386 DX Prozessor mit 33 MHz. Der RAM-Speicher ist über eine Klappe unter der Tastatur zugänglich.
- Es ist eines der ersten Geräte mit einem Farb-LCD-Bildschirm. Und die größte Überraschung ist, dass man dieses LCD einfach abnehmen und durch ein anderes Display ersetzen kann.
- Mein Gerät hat leider nicht die Vorrichtung zum Öffnen des ersten Scharniers. Andere Modelle dieser Baureihe hatten das und ermöglichten eine höhere Position des Bildschirms. Vor allem war der Bildschirm dadurch noch weiter hinten angeordnet.
- Dieser Laptop hat wie der Macintosh Portable aus dem Jahr 1989 einen Tragegriff. Außerdem ist noch ein kleines LCD-Display rechts neben dem Griff sichtbar.
- Die Anschlüsse auf der Rückseite des Gehäuses sind hinter einer Klappe versteckt. Die Anschlussstecker sind mit Pictogrammen auf der Klappe beschrieben.
- An der linken Seite ist ein Steckplatz hinter einer Abdeckung sichtbar.
- Der Akku ist unter der Tastatur verstaut und kann leicht entnommen werden.
- Mitgeliefert wird auch eine Akkuladebox. Diese hat den Computer aber auch mit Strom versorgt, wenn der Akku nicht eingesteckt war.
- Ein Touchpad mit zwei Tasten ist auf der rechten Seite über der Tastatur angeordnet. Im Displayrahmen ist ein Stift für die Bedienung des Touchpads enthalten.
- Eine 3,5″ Floppy ist auf der rechten Seite vorhanden.

Tragekoffer des Olivetti Laptop D33/C
Auch beim Tragekoffer hat sich Olivetti Gedanken gemacht. Der Koffer war massiv und wurde durch ein Zahlenschloss gesichert. Wenn man diesen Koffer öffnet, dann liegt der Laptop im oberen Fach. Darunter ist eine Schale, die man entfernen kann. In dem Bereich darunter liegen die Akkuladestation und weitere Kabel. Wahrscheinlich lagen damals auch die Handbücher für die Inbetriebnahme des Computers in diesem Fach. Diese sind aber leider nicht mehr vorhanden.
Fazit
Alles in Allem ist dies ein würdiges Sammlungsstück. Olivetti hatte versucht ein außergewöhnliches Produkt herzustellen. Es wurde lange von meinem Spender genutzt und war ein zuverlässiger Begleiter für alle geschäftlichen Vorgänge. Vielen herzlichen Dank für diesen Schlepptop 😀 Es war auf jeden Fall praktikabler und besser nutzbar, als das Apple-Produkt, was in diesem Jahr verfügbar war.
