Computermuseum: Apple MacBook Air from 2008

What luck! A 2008 MacBook Air, model number A1237, in almost pristine condition arrived today. I found a seller in my area on kleinanzeigen who was offering this iconic computer in great condition. It even came with the original packaging and all the cables. Of course, the battery no longer works, but the computer starts up when connected to the power supply. And it doesn’t have the original 80 GB hard drive, but a larger one with 120 GB. Anja, thank you very much for this computer in such good condition.

Iconic Laptop

But what makes this computer so special that I absolutely wanted it for my computermuseum? When Steve Jobs took it out of an envelope, the audience was thrilled. There had never been such a flat laptop with a 13″ screen and a normal sized keyboard before. The PC world was shocked. It took until 2011 for Intel to invent the UltraBook label, and then laptops came onto the market that were just as flat and sexy as the MacBook Air.

I’ve seen the MacBook Air commercial so often that the music is burned into my memory. That’s why this keynote has remained very much in my memory. And I have decided that I want to add this iconic laptop to my collection.

But we mustn’t forget that the first MacBook Air was a very low-performance Mac with few ports. In the same year, Apple released an improved MacBook Air.

For me, the flap with the hidden ports is definitely iconic. Later MacBook Airs no longer had this feature. And the aluminum unibody housing of the MacBook Air ushered in the aluminum unibody era of Apple laptops in 2008, which continues to this day.

Was für ein Glück. Ein MacBook Air von 2008, Modellnummer A1237, in fast makellosem Zustand ist heute bei mir angekommen. Über kleinanzeigen konnte ich in meiner Nähe eine Anbieterin finden, die diesen ikonischen Computer in diesem tollen Zustand anbot. Sogar mit der Originalverpackung und allen Kabeln. Natürlich funktioniert der Akku nicht mehr, aber der Computer startet mit angeschlossenem Netzteil. Und es ist nicht die Original 80 GB Festplatte enthalten, sondern eine größere mit 120 GB. Anja, vielen Dank für diesen sehr gut erhaltenen Computer.

Ikonisches Laptop

Aber was macht diesen Computer so besonders, dass ich ihn unbedingt für mein Computermuseum haben wollte? Als Steve Jobs ihn aus einem Briefumschlag holte war das Publikum begeistert. Ein so flaches Laptop mit 13“ Bildschirm und normaler Tastatur hat es noch nicht gegeben. Die PC Welt war geschockt. Es dauerte bis 2011, erst dann erfand Intel das UltraBook Label und dann kamen Laptops auf den Markt, die genauso flach und sexy wie das MacBook Air waren.

Ich habe die Werbung zum MacBook Air so oft gesehen, dass sich die Musik in mein Gedächtnis eingebrannt hat. Deshalb ist mir diese Keynote sehr in Erinnerung geblieben. Und ich habe mir vorgenommen, dass ich dieses ikonische Laptop in meine Sammlung aufnehmen will.

Man darf aber nicht vergessen, dass das erste MacBook Air ein sehr wenig leistungsfähiger Mac mit wenig Anschlüssen war. Im selben Jahr lieferte Apple ein verbessertes MacBook Air aus.

Ikonisch ist für mich auf jeden Fall die Klappe mit den versteckten Ports. Spätere MacBook Airs hatten das nicht mehr. Und das Aluminium Unibody-Gehäuse des MacBook Air hat im Jahr 2008 die Aluminium Unibody Ära der Apple Laptops eingeläutet, die bis heute andauert.
