The HP Pre 3 was the first HP smartphone with Web OS. After takeover of Palm they tried to build up a Web OS ecosystem on smartphones, tablets, printers and also on computers. Unfortunately with their new german CEO Leo Apotheker they changed their entire strategy and wanted to switch business from hardware to software. Apotheker came from SAP and believed in software as the new market for HP. They discontinued their smartphone and tablet products they released only days before. So it was hard for me to find an HP branded Pre 3 beside my own Palm Pre 2.
Finally I got one over eBay during the Corona pandemic crisis. The seller sent it to me and after I received it I waited three days to open it. I desinfected it immediately and then took some photos with the HP Pre 3 and the Palm Pre 2 side by side. When I re-opened the Pre 2 box the plastic of the device was in an awful sticky state. Cleaning did not help. A few years before I made the same experience with a Palm Treo 750. Obviously Palm used bad quality plastic material. The material of the HP Pre is good. No such issues as with the Palm devices. The Pre 3 is bigger in all three dimensions. This device still works and waits for inserting a SIM card. Das HP Pre 3 war das erste HP Smartphone mit Web OS. Nach der Übernahme von Palm versuchte man, ein Web OS-Ökosystem auf Smartphones, Tablets, Druckern und auch auf Computern aufzubauen. Leider änderten sie mit ihrem neuen deutschen CEO Leo Apotheker ihre gesamte Strategie und wollten von Hardware auf Software umsteigen. Apotheker kam von SAP und glaubte an Software als den neuen Markt für HP. Sie stellten ihre Smartphone- und Tablet-Produkte ein, die sie nur wenige Tage zuvor herausgebracht hatten. Daher war es schwierig für mich, neben meinem eigenen Palm Pre 2 ein Pre 3 von HP zu finden.
Schließlich bekam ich während der Corona-Pandemie-Krise einen über eBay. Der Verkäufer schickte ihn mir, und nachdem ich ihn erhalten hatte, wartete ich drei Tage, bevor ich das Paket öffnete. Ich desinfizierte alles sofort und machte dann einige Fotos mit dem HP Pre 3 und dem Palm Pre 2 nebeneinander. Als ich den Pre 2 öffnete, war das Plastik in einem furchtbar klebrigen Zustand. Die Reinigung hat nicht geholfen. Ein paar Jahre zuvor hatte ich dieselbe Erfahrung mit einem Palm Treo 750 gemacht. Offensichtlich verwendete Palm Plastik von schlechter Qualität. Das Material des HP Pre ist gut. Keine Probleme wie bei den Palm-Geräten. Der Pre 3 ist in allen drei Dimensionen größer. Dieses Gerät funktioniert immer noch und wartet auf das Einlegen einer SIM-Karte. Bitte schaut euch die Fotos für den Vergleich der beiden Pre-Generationen an.
