Computermuseum: Apple MacBook Air 13” from 2010

A Steve Jobs, clearly marked by his illness, took to the stage in October 2010 and presented the new design of the successful MacBook Air model at a special Apple event. The main surprise, however, was that there was also to be an 11-inch MacBook Air, which would not make any compromises. This was the smallest laptop ever built by Apple. Apple was able to bring the price down to $1,000 for a MacBook Air for the first time.

While the first MacBook Air from 2008 still contained a hard drive, this MacBook Air was built with the experience gained from iPhone and iPad production. Only flash memory was used. The SSD memory chips were glued directly onto the mainboard. The battery took up most of the space and allowed for longer runtimes. And this was the first MacBook with the Multitouch Trackpad.

Apple was particularly proud of the new wedge design of the MacBook Air. This elegant design was particularly emphasised in the commercial that Apple produced. Up to this point, the PC world had no answer to Apple’s flat MacBooks. But the wedge design ended up being the inspiration for Intel to launch the UltraBook label in 2011. This was associated with funding support for manufacturers of this type of laptop. It was the starting point for many PC manufacturers to bring attractively designed and slim Wintel laptops onto the market. Examples include the Dell XPS 13, Asus Zenbook, HP Envy 14 Spectre, Lenovo Ideapad and Toshiba Portégé.

Also for this computer I say thank you to Anja, from whom I already received the MacBook Air from 2008. Both are in pristine condition.

Ein deutlich von seiner Krankheit gezeichneter Steve Jobs betrat im Oktober 2010 die Bühne und stellte in einem Apple Special Event das neue Design des Erfolgsmodells MacBook Air vor. Die Überraschung war aber vor allem, dass es auch noch ein MacBook Air in 11“ geben sollte, das auch keinerlei Kompromisse eingehen sollte. Dies war das kleinste jemals gebaute Laptop von Apple. Apple war es damals möglich erstmals den Preis auf 1000$ für ein MacBook Air herunterzubringen.

Während das erste MacBook Air von 2008 noch eine Festplatte enthielt, war dieses MacBook Air mit den Erfahrungen aus der iPhone- und iPad-Produktion gebaut worden. So wurde nur noch Flash-Speicher verbaut. Die SSD-Speicherchips waren direkt auf das Mainboard geklebt. Den meisten Platz nahm der Akku ein und erlaubte längere Laufzeiten. Und dies war das erste MacBook mit dem Multitouch Trackpad.

Ganz besonders stolz war Apple auf das neue Keil-Design des MacBook Air. In dem Werbespot, den Apple produzierte wurde dieses elegante Design besonders hervorgehoben. Die PC-Welt hatte bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt keine Antwort auf die flachen MacBooks von Apple. Aber das Keil-Design war dann schließlich die Inspiration für Intel, die im Jahr 2011 das UltraBook-Label veröffentlichten. Damit war eine Finanzierungsunterstützung für Produzenten dieser Art von Laptops verbunden. Dies war der Startpunkt für viele PC-Hersteller, attraktiv gestaltete und flache Wintel-Laptops auf den Markt zu bringen. Beispiele davon sind Dell XPS 13, Asus Zenbook, HP Envy 14 Spectre, Lenovo Ideapad und Toshiba Portégé.

Auch für diesen Computer sage ich Danke an Anja, von der ich schon das MacBook Air von 2008 erhalten habe. Beide sind in einem makellosen Zustand.
